The Office of the Independent Regulator (OIR) has carried out its first assessment and monitoring program. This program assessed how AYDC is putting child safe requirements into practice. The program focused on what is working well, where improvement is needed, and what changes could strengthen safety, accountability and wellbeing for young people.
This document is a public summary of the report. It does not include all operational details, which are contained in the full assessment report provided to the organisation.
The OIR Recommendations covered:
- Embed cultural safety in leadership and governance
Make cultural safety a clear and ongoing part of leadership, governance and everyday practice, with stronger input from Aboriginal community and cultural leaders.
- Turn policy into everyday practice
Create a clear system that helps staff understand what child safe policies mean in day-to-day work, with clear actions, responsibilities and follow-up.
- Involve safeguarding expertise earlier in policy work
Make sure safeguarding experts are involved from the start when policies and procedures are developed or reviewed.
- Respond faster and communicate better after serious incidents
Improve how serious incidents are managed so responses are quicker, clearer and young people are kept informed and taken seriously.
- Strengthen the training function at AYDC
Invest in training, staff support and professional development so workers have the skills they need to provide safe, therapeutic and culturally safe care.
