Our Strategic Plan

Our Strategic Plan is based on three pillars that provide a road map for how we will achieve progress against our priority areas including the actions we need to take.

Pillar 1: People and Partners

The people that work in OIR

  • Our people have the clarity, skills and resources to do their jobs well.
  • We work in an environment where individual and collective strengths and differences are celebrated, and skills are shared.
  • We create an environment where people help and support one another without hesitation.

The people we work with (partners)

  • We are a trusted authority and build and maintain strong relationships with organisations and other stakeholders by engaging with intent.
  • We communicate with purpose to influence meaningful change.
  • We promote opportunities to work collaboratively with partners to achieve efficiencies and keep children and young people safe.

The people we work for (Tasmanian children and young people, parents, carers, families, community)

  • We work respectfully with children, families and communities and hold organisations accountable for keeping children and young people at the centre of their work.
  • We value diversity and support organisations to uphold the Universal Principle to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.
  • We are informed by the expertise of victim survivors of child abuse and recognise the history this represents.
Pillar 2: Practices and Powers

Oversight – use of our powers

  • We assert the role of the OIR in building the capability of organisations to meet their compliance obligations.
  • We focus our oversight on organisations working with children and young people most at risk.
  • We are decisive, transparent and consistent in utilising our powers, to keep children safe.

Developing and improving our practice

  • We have clear and consistent policies and procedures to guide our work.
  • We use an evidence-based approach to regulation while recognising the value of creativity and discretion in our approaches.
  • Our work practices are integrated and efficient.

Developing and improving the practices of organisations we oversee

  • Organisations realise the value of implementing child safe practices and take action to comply.
  • We meet organisations where they’re at to drive compliance.
  • Organisations carry out high-quality investigations and use the Child and Youth Safe Standards to improve their child safe practices.
Pillar 3: OIR Processes

How we work with one another (internal)

  • We are collaborative in the way we work and have robust governance processes and effective systems to connect our functions.
  • We express ourselves freely and respectfully, with honesty and constructive intent.
  • Individual and collective successes are recognised and celebrated with challenges shared and accepted as learnings.

How we work with organisations (external)

  • We have a strategic, structured and considered approach for purposeful engagement with organisations.
  • We continue to build knowledge and skills in the community about how to keep children and young people safe and prevent harm.
  • We will escalate our regulatory response based on organisational attitude and engagement.

How we work with our strategic partners

  • We work collaboratively with relevant authorities, advocates and regulators in Tasmania to provide responsive regulation that is efficient and effective.
  • We collaborate with our jurisdictional counterparts to learn from one another and promote harmonisation of our respective schemes.
  • We are agile and can effectively respond to new challenges in a rapidly changing child safe environment.
